Sound Design

Hello everybody!

Today I'm going to tell you about working with sound design at KFI. This item is brand new at KFI. I explained the different disciplines in sound design, we watched documentary's and finally we recognized sound fx and sound design in "underworld". Today we finally got to make our own sound design. The students were given a piece of music from a soundtrack on which they had to write a story. They made a script, storyboard and finally they made a short movie. After editing we made a sound design for the movies. Because this was the first time I was handling all of the technical stuff. The students had to come up with concepts and had to create sounds. I needed average 2 hours per group, while the movies lasted only 2 minutes. A lott of work:
- Dialogue (re-recording all dialogue)
- Foley (footsteps, clothes, small re-recordings)
- Sound FX (effect sounds/atmospheres)
- Sound-Editing/Spot FX (gathering the bigger sounds, which could not be recorded with the
computer

My main goal was to open the eyes of the students! Show them the possibilities of sound design. Explore, realize and experiment with sounds. I achieved this goal today!! Next time I want to give the students a lesson in recording, so that they can start for themselves!

More next time...

Bye

Joseph (joep)

  1. Hey joep, nice to hear that you started this new area with them. I think it's not easy to tell about the abstract facts of sounddesign but you seems to be happy, that's good! Goodluck and see you next week.
